Turbidity Index

What is Turbidity?

Turbidity is the measure of relative clarity of a liquid (water in this case) in ntu’s (nephelometric turbidity units). Turbidity consists of particles in the water that diffract a beam of light. These particles may consist of fine sands, clay, silt, finely divided inorganic and organic matter, plankton and other microscopic organisms. Erosion of natural substances and decomposition of organics will cause particles to suspend in water.

What is the Turbidity Index?

On March 9, 2005 the BC Interior Health Authority (IHA) announced a new Turbidity Education and Notification campaign.  Dr. Paul Hasselback explained that all water systems serving greater than 300 connections will be required to report to the public when the drinking water supply exceeds 1 NTU.

As part of this campaign, Greater Vernon Water, will be providing the daily turbidity readings for all surface sources.  It is important to note that all of the sources that supply Greater Vernon Water customers are currently unfiltered.
